Staying inspired can be a challenge, particularly for new writers.

We are all subject to the ebb and flow of our inner driving force – motivation. Some days, we awaken with the audacity to conquer an assignment, and other days we fall prey to procrastination.

Prior to my transition from journalism to travel writing in May 2015, I was a full-time freelance feature writer for a weekly community newspaper and regional monthly magazine in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Creating my own techniques to break through writer’s block was essential to meeting recurring deadlines.

If you’re struggling to blaze a new trail in your life, first face the fact that with any new job, we are forced to embrace the unknown. Yes, sailing into uncharted territory can be scary and unsettling, and that fear can take a toll on any future goals you might have to plan your next trip, complete a writing assignment or pitch an editor. My key to unlocking my creativity is my imagination.

Try these three motivators to boost your writing.

  • Close your eyes for a moment and imagine flipping through the pages of your favorite travel magazine to the page where your premier story appears, along with the dazzling photographs you sold to the editor. (For example, my dream job is an all-expenses-paid writing-and-photography assignment with an illustrious publication that’s been around since I was a child.)
  • Ask yourself, “How badly do I want to travel the world and see my name on a by-line? (Hopefully, your answer is, “I can pack and be ready to leave in an hour.”)
  • Find an external force to clear your head. Take a walk and listen to a travel podcast that you’ve downloaded to your smart phone. (Great Escape Publishing offers a new free one every week.)

More than likely, after refocusing your thoughts, you’ll free your under-stimulated – or over stimulated – mind from the clutter and distractions that are preventing you from tackling your next project, and you’ll return to your laptop feeling energized and optimistic. If not, take another break and try again – and always keep your eye on the prize.
