Once upon a time there was a farmer who always grew the best corn. Every year at the state fair, he got the highest marks for it… and won the biggest and best farming awards. When a reporter asked him for his secret, he said that he always buys the best seed and he shares that seed with his neighboring farmers. Confused, the reporter asked why he would want to share the seed and risk the other farmers beating him at the next competition. With a smile, the farmer explained cross-pollination. If his neighbors grow inferior corn, the wind will blow pollen from their field into his and they’d both grow inferior corn.   But when he shares his “good seed,” everybody wins. I love this lesson. And I think it applies to what we do here at Great Escape. If I teach you how to experience new places and cultures like a local instead of a tourist, more people will travel this way. Also, if I can get you to take pictures that really document a place… and pictures that highlight the strength and beauty of other cultures… maybe we can change the provincial view some people (those who don’t travel) have on the rest of the world. All I want is for people to enjoy their lives… do what they love… and travel the world in a way that’s unlike the typical tourist.  I want you to appreciate the things you see and do. I want you to feel like you’re not only learning more about the world, you’re also learning more about yourself. When we created our flagship program, The Ultimate Travel Writer’s Program, the creator, Jennifer Stevens, had all these things in mind.  She wanted people to travel differently (and better).  And she wanted the nonsense we hear on television and see on the Internet about other cultures to stop. If you’d like to travel with purpose… or you simply want to find a way to travel more often and with more luxuries than you can afford (or want to afford), then travel writing is your best ticket. It gives you an excuse to travel, and it pays you to have fun. Even if you want to stay home (at least while you find your feet), the program works because it guides you through the process of selling articles about your hometown to magazines and newspapers around the world.
