Happy New Year!
Back in January 2013, Forbes published an article by Paul Brown titled: How to Plan Your Life When You Can’t Plan Your Life. In it, Brown said the old way of planning for your future no longer works.
Gone are the days where you can set goals by outlining all the necessary steps it takes to complete something and then crossing them off one by one. That works when the future is predictable — but it isn’t, anymore.
Today, everything is so unpredictable you can only take a small step towards something you desire, learn from that step, and then step again.
When asked about her success, Oprah Winfrey said if she knew beforehand that starting her own network would be as hard as it was, she never would have done it. But one step on top of another – using her failures as road signs to go the other way – was how she got there.
I’ve noticed this shift in our member success stories, too.
Some folks start with travel writing, then end up with success in photography, travel videos, creating their own tours, or import-export.
The good news is it’s a time of feast for people who like to travel because there are so many great opportunities out there today.
Every editor on our Editor Panel last year said they’re buying more stories and more photos than ever before. Stock photography sales are up. Video is steadily growing. And our importers are reporting the highest sales I’ve ever seen.
It doesn’t matter what you start with. The trick is simply replacing all the time you used to spend planning… with action. Take a small step. Learn from that step. Repeat.
It also matters that you’re happy. I assume that’s why you’re here after all — to figure out how to find success doing something fun and fulfilling.
Who cares if the future is unpredictable?
My dad used to say real estate was a good investment because they’re not making more land. But just last month Amazon got a patent to create the very first in-air fulfillment center – a floating warehouse with all the goods you currently order online delivered to your doorstep by drone from above the clouds. Apartment buildings are getting taller and investors are building their own islands in the sea. Who needs land?
Look for ways to take small steps forward this year and you’ll come out ahead. January is a great month to start.
And stay tuned for more stories this week from members and pros who have found their own methods of success and are happy to pass along their best tips.
