The Key To Success And Finding Your Passion
Who knew an old spaghetti metaphor could apply to travel writing?
“Throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and see what sticks,” said Lori Allen, Director of Great Escape Publishing when I met her in July.
She was speaking metaphorically about finding your passion – that thing you’re good at (or could be trained to become good at) that also offers income opportunities.
This was one of my biggest takeaways from Great Escape Publishing’s first-ever Summer Social in Washington, D.C. This event was like a sampler platter of the courses offered by Great Escape Publishing. I hope they do it again.
Another valuable thing that I got out of the Summer Social was this: In American culture, we have this idea that winners never quit. But that’s simply not true.
Lori pointed out that winners quit things all the time. In fact, winners quit faster than others. They try something and see right away whether or not it’s going to work out. Rather than wasting a lot of time and energy trying to force something to work for them, if it isn’t working, they simply let it go and move on to something else.
I have always believed in this “Italian pasta” method of vocational experimentation: Throw a bunch of stuff against the wall, and see what sticks. Over the years, I’ve bought and used many courses from Great Escape Publishing. And in my case, nearly all of them have proven successful for me.
After using their Ultimate Travel Writer’s course and the Breaking Into In-Flight Magazines course, I had a couple dozen articles published in magazines and on websites. I’ve even gotten a few free trips out of it.
I learned the ins and outs of stock photography from the Breakfast Stock Club and now have more than 225 photos in several online stock agencies generating passive income for me. And my portfolio keeps growing.
And after completing their Guided Tours for Fun and Profit course, I put together two of my own guided tours and turned a profit on those, too.
My big “problem,” I guess, is that Great Escape Publishing’s courses are so good, I’ve managed to find some measure of success with every one of them that I’ve tried so far.
So what do you do when you throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and nearly all of it sticks?
As any success guru will tell you, that’s a high-quality problem to have! I mean, just imagine the alternative where you try a bunch of stuff and nothing works out. You can waste a lot of time and money and have nothing to show for it.
Luckily, the staff at Great Escape Publishing produces great courses that are easy to follow. They also offer some really innovative ways for you to try out several different interests at once until you find your own passion – throw a bunch of stuff against the wall, so to speak.
My advice? Just pick one or two (or three or four). They ALL worked for me. It’s less about picking the best fit and more about getting out of the center of the road where you choose none.
Quitting isn’t bad. Just hurry up and get out there. Quit faster when you know something isn’t right or you’re just ready for the next fun, shiny thing.
Some tips to help you on your way:
- Go to a live event where you can meet and make friends with some of the Great Escape instructors and staff. Ask questions, put a face to a name, find partners and collaborators, and more.
- Most of their live events include add-on days. I like these because you can try two things in one trip. You might go to a three-day event on travel writing, and add on an extra day to learn about photography, for example. Or go to a photography event, and then tack on how to do video.
- Just get started and try something new when you want a change. Variety is the spice of life, they say. And everything GEP offers is backed by an unconditional money-back guarantee. Or if you’re like me, you might find that everything sticks and now you have options for fun year-round.
