Last week, I mentioned one of my goals this year was to climb Mt. Baker on July 8. The plan was to climb half-way up on Friday, camp on the mountain, then get up at midnight and summit at sunrise.

Well, today is July 8, and I’m sitting in my home office in Portland. They’re predicting 11 inches of snow overnight in the mountains. Our trip was canceled.

I bring this up because it’s important not to become disheartened when outside circumstances make our goals impossible.

My REAL goal wasn’t to climb the mountain… but to be completely prepared to attempt to climb it.

That meant learning knots, gathering gear, researching rescue techniques, and lots and lots of early morning stair climbs before work.

I didn’t get to see the summit of Mt. Baker this year. But I met my goal of being ready.

If your photography goals depend too much on outside circumstances, tweak them. Rather than saying “I will sell this many photos,” say “I will take this many,” and “I will upload this many.”

Then make the time and space to do it.

Overall, this has been a super successful quarterly check-in! I’m blown away by your progress towards your goals. Here are just a few from the Breakfast Stock Club Facebook Page

From Cornelia: June was the first month I set any goals (I’m new to Breakfast StockClub). I achieved my monthly goals of uploading 30+ photos to 3 agencies, and 70+ to iStock. I now have an average of 70 photos online with 4 agencies, and am gradually learning what’s stock-worthy, and what isn’t.

I’ve also upgraded my camera, and joined the local photography club. I’m going to need all the inspiration I can to keep meeting my upload goals every month!

From George: I’ve now been accepted at six agencies, including Shutterstock, and have anywhere from 10 to 20 photos at each agency. I’ve sold a few photos at several of the sites, and have accumulated total sales of about $20 so far.

From Patrick: So far, I have increased my stock portfolio by over 100 images at iStock, Shutterstock, Dreamstime, and Alamy, and I sold 5 fine art pieces to a local restaurant! I am also starting a summer project to create photo cards of local points of interest and will try to sell them at local souvenir shops and bookstores. So far, so good!

From Theresa: I have somehow made a good deal of progress on my goals so far this year. For some reason, Shutterstock has always been intimidating to me… I finally submitted 80 more images to the stock site and 77 were accepted. Dreamstime has accepted 767 images so far this year. (I upload to them every single day, no fail.) Bigstock has accepted 201 since January. I have also uploaded and had success with Fotolia and Alamy. I am cashing checks every month. I wanted to book some photography jobs and have had 3 so far, with another 2 booked in August. I am also entering an art show here in Saratoga this August.

Wow. Just WOW!! You guys are killing it!

But if that just isn’t you and you’re not really making any goals, yet, or not able to keep up with them… it’s ok. Re-focus. Pick new goals. Find something you love to photograph, and focus on that.

Then pick some times you can upload your photos, and get it done!

We’ll check in again on Friday, September 30.

Editor’s Note: Learn more about getting started selling your photos online in stock agencies – no matter how much or little photography experience you have – in the Breakfast Stock Club e-newsletter. It’s once a week, and it’s free to join, here.
