To help you stay on top of emerging trends in travel writing and photography — so you can keep tabs on where the money is — I wanted to pass along two articles that caught my eye recently, one from The New York Times and the other from USA Today… This first one is about new trends in food-related articles. Once known for their coverage of fancy foods and up-scale restaurants, many high-end “foodie” magazines are now covering cheap wines and including articles about what to do with leftovers: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/02/business/media/02mag.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=cheap%20home%20eating&st=cse I’m sure you’ve noticed a similar trend in travel magazines as well. It’s value, value, value all the way through — money-saving travel tips… affordable cruises… bang-for-your-buck destinations. Jen Stevens talked about this at our workshop this past weekend in New Orleans. The second article I wanted to pass along to you appeared in USA Today and talks about how people are creating for themselves a six-figure income stream through stock photos (even during a recession): http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2009-03-10-online-stock-photos_N.htm We talk about that all the time — so it won’t be news to you. But it’s interesting that a mainstream publication has finally noticed an income opportunity we’ve been telling you about for years. The piece opens with the story of a guy who’s bringing in six figures with stock — working part-time. It’s worth a read. You know, even with the economy in the dumps, people haven’t stopped spending. They’ve just changed their habits. There’s still plenty of opportunity for you to sell stories about your travels… turn your pictures into cash… and see the world while you get paid to do it. It’s just a matter of knowing where to find those opportunities now. That’s something we’ll talk more about in the next few weeks. And it’s a matter, too, of simply deciding you’ll do it. George Bernard Shaw said: “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Jani Bryson, one of our presenters in New Orleans last weekend, offered up that quote when she was describing the way she “reinvented” herself. She woke up one day and just decided she’d had enough of 80-hour weeks and that she was going to make a living doing what she loves: snapping pictures. And now she does. A good one, too. And if she can do it, so can you… Till next week, — Lori Lori Allen Director, Great Escape Publishing P.S. If you’re ready to “take the plunge” and go for it, to create yourself, as Shaw put it — then you won’t want to miss a once-in-a-lifetime trip with us.
