When I first saw my daughter swim under water, I thought she was drowning.

“Look mom,” she screamed across the pool.  “I can swim under water.”  Only what she did was more like a dog paddle and when she came up to the surface she’d only moved about a foot.

“That’s great, honey,” I replied, not wanting to get in.  “Maybe I can find a swim lesson for you next week so you can learn some technique.  With a little help, you’ll be able to swim across the pool before your birthday.”

“I can do that now,” she screamed back, and immediately disappeared under the surface for another dog paddle.

And this is where everything changed.

This was one of those parenting moments where you realize that you’re actually learning more about humanity in this moment than you are about kids.

That little firecracker decided she was going to teach herself how to swim that day and I’ll be darned if she didn’t.  Up and down she went.  Kicking and then not kicking.  Testing different methods until she found the one that moved her the farthest.

I was thinking she needed better equipment or skill.  But what she really needed to make it happen was just a decision.

And isn’t that true about all of us?

Sometimes we have all the right equipment and all the right skills but we shelf it and we wait.  It’s not until we really decide to do something that it actually all comes together.

And vice versa, I’m sure you can remember a time you decided to do something against all odds.  No equipment.  No skill.  But come h*ll or high water, you made it happen.

It’s the decision that comes first.  Skill and equipment are second.  And that’s a lesson worth sharing.

So what will you decide to do today?

Write a travel story?  Get better at taking pictures?  Spend more time with your family?  Take them on a trip?

Whatever you decide, I hope it’s something fun.
