When you sell your photos through stock agencies, you suddenly become “legit” in the eyes of your friends. (That’s right—as you start to make money selling photos online, you can call yourself a professional.) The same friend who, a week ago, said, “You can’t make a living as an artist,” calls to ask how much you charge for headshots. Stock photography can replace your entire income if you have time and patience. It’ll likely take a couple of years to get up to a full-time paycheck. But if you want to do something that’s fun, doesn’t take a lot of effort, makes you a nice side income, and leads to other photo opportunities, it’s excellent for that, too. For instance, meet J. make money selling photos online J’s a salsa dancer, and she needs photos. So I invited her over with some friends for a stock photo shoot. In exchange for signing model releases, they would get digital copies of the best photos from the day. This one, of another friend at the shoot, ended up on a cookbook cover: Testing the Cupcakes I had no idea what I was doing, but it was fun because they were friends. No pressure. Lots of fun and goofing off. Three years later, I got an e-mail from a stranger asking how much I charge for headshots. Turns out J’s dad needed one for his LinkedIn profile and she referred him to me. A quick 45-minute shoot with him made me $250. And Mrs. Cookbook Cover, above, comes to me once a year for family photos, too. With stock photography, you can start selling photos within a week. Next time your friends come over, you can stop telling them you want to sell your photos… and mention how you’ve started selling photos through stock agencies. You don’t have to tell them how easy it was. Share on Facebook
