Yesterday I gave you the top five things that the most successful photographers do, which you can start doing this week. Find them here and get started. I have a full-time job right here, at this desk, writing these e-letters, leading workshops, and heading up the Breakfast Stock Club. But I still make photography income on the side. It’s fun, and it’s exhilarating to watch my income grow each year. Here’s a break-down of my photo income so far this year: photo-income-chart As you can see, weddings take the cake (er… pie). Headshots come in a close second (and are much quicker than weddings!), with my stock earnings coming in third place. This year, I started offering gift cards and tutoring services, too, which add a little into the pie. Is this hard? Well, weddings aren’t easy, but I love them. I love the story telling, the constant action, and trying to take artistic photos of the “Big Moments” of the day. As for the others… I’ve practically ignored my stock portfolios this year, and they’re still bringing in an income, so that’s easy. Headshots are very formulaic and quick. Family photos are also somewhat formulaic, and fun. I love tutoring. And gift cards eventually go into family or some other “slice.” All of these avenues take time, yes. And the willingness to always do your best. But once you get the hang of it, they’re a thrill! My marketing consists of a photography Facebook Page (you can “like” it here!). That’s it. Most of these gigs come from friends and referrals. I’ve fallen into shooting directly for clients, but you could replace any of my pie “slices” with various other photo markets, too… from magazines to fine art to product photography… you name it. There’s a whole world of opportunity out there if you’re open to it. Share on Facebook
