One moment the world is as it is. The next, it is something entirely different. Something it has never been before.” – Anne Rice, Pandora

Great Escape Radio host, Jody Maberry and Director, Lori Allen bring Theresa St. John back to the show to talk about the intangibles she experiences in her travel writing career through writing and photography and how they change her perspective. You can listen to our first podcast with her here.

Lori re-introduces us to Theresa…

“I always say I love our guests, and I do. Theresa is exceptionally kind and caring and I think that helps her be a really good travel writer. People open up to her. It’s easy to talk to Theresa, so it’s not that big of a surprise to me that she gets these really great stories.”

Since Theresa was last on the show, she’s been traveling, writing and taking lots of photos. She’s traveled to Paris, New Orleans, Boston, New Hampshire and to several areas of New York. And she’s currently planning another trip to Ireland.

As Theresa says…

“I’ve been busy taking pictures and telling stories, it’s what I do!”

On a previous episode, Lori Allen talked about the intangible elements of writing and photography—the way travel writers and photographers see the world when looking for great photos or great stories rather than seeing it as a tourist.

It’s about emotions: joy, sadness, happiness, anger.

Theresa agrees…

“When I’m working on a story, I want to be the one to take the photos. I want to be able to convey the emotions a particular scene evoked in me at that moment.”

She also shares tips for seeing things from a different perspective…

“Sometimes I give myself an assignment to go out and just take photos of things that are blue. Or, maybe I’ll just change my direction. Instead of going right for my routine bike ride, I’ll go left.”

Changing perspective changes the story.

Listen in as Theresa’s talks more about her experiences in travel writing and photography and how she finds great stories.
