Dear Reader, Ever feel like you’re stuck at a plateau? Last week, no matter what I did, I just couldn’t get my photos to come out right. I even started to wonder, “Could I be getting worse at this?” Just take a look at this shot I took for this month’s Breakfast Stock Club Premium Challenge, “Active Lifestyle”: Not only is the subject right in the middle of the photo (and really far away), but it’s also too dark, it’s blurry, and the dog is walking in the exact opposite direction!! But as I looked back at my photos from the day, a light switch went on in my head. I realized that I know so much more about stock photography now than I did a year ago. Of course that makes it much easier to see the faults in a photo. When that happens, you’re actually getting better… it just doesn’t feel like it. Here’s what to do when you hit a plateau: 1. Re-evaluate where you really are. Look back at your photos from a year ago and note the progress you’ve made so far. Chances are you’ve come farther than you think. 2. Try something new. Never tried food photography? Try it out. Always wanted to do macro photography? Rent a macro lens and give it a try. If you’re a Breakfast Stock Club Premium member, look through past Roadmaps for ideas and how-to instructions and try shooting a stock photo subject you’ve never shot before. 3. Start a project. Select a week or a month and make yourself a goal. For example, you could photograph a stranger each day, or do a macro shot a day… or photograph your dog or cat. This works great for me. In October, I set up lights in my basement and photographed myself each day. I learned so much! Plus, four of them are now up for sale on iStockphoto.com. Of course, the Breakfast Stock Club Premium Challenges are great for this, too. And keep shooting! Don’t get discouraged if you take a few stinkers. After all, I did take a few shots I liked that day, too. Here’s my favorite: P.S. Taking on a monthly project is a great way to learn and grow. You can get new topics for projects delivered to your in-box once a month in the form of the Breakfast Stock Club Premium Challenges. Some topics we’ve done include Textures and Patterns, Natural People in Natural Light, Illness and Cures, Travel Stock Photography, Macro, and more. Upcoming Challenge topics include: Food and Beverages, Self Portraits, Love, Rainy Day Shots, and so many more! Plus, each month comes with a “Roadmap” full of pointers, a group review by a pro stock photographer, and a lesson at the end.
